Tukino sits on the remote eastern side of Ruapehu and sees a fraction of the traffic of the main ski areas, making it one of the better spots for ski touring on the mountain. This long weekend trip takes in the Whangaehu Glacier and surrounding terrain, with objectives varying depending on snow conditions and group ability. Skins, touring bindings and avalanche safety gear are required, along with basic alpine skills. A step up from a standard ALP 1 trip, suited to those comfortable on snow with some ski touring experience.
