Grade 1 terrain - route requires proficient use of ice axe and crampons, but does not require ropes or pitched climbing.

Grade 2+ terrain - route may also require two axes, ropes, pitched climbing, and placing natural protection in rock, snow and ice.
A plus sign (+) indicates additional difficulty or specific skills required.
ALP 1 - Tahurangi via Skyline Ridge
Skyline Ridge is a classic Ruapehu climb, first ascended in 1879.
ALP 1 - Taranaki via Syme Hut
The attraction and the ease of access to this lone alpine peak have probably made it New Zealand's most climbed mountain.
ALP 1 - Te Hue Hue
The Waikato River has its source on the flanks of this peak, which presents quite different characteristics when viewed from its different aspects.
ALP 1 - Turoa - Whakapapa Traverse
Ruapehu dominates the North Island’s central plateau. Its great bulk is visible in the distance across much of the North Island.
ALP 1 - Mt Tongariro / Ngauruhoe
Under snow, the broad expanses of the Tongariro craters are a unique alpine environment. It’s a great day out. You will need an ice axe, crampons, and the ability to use them.
ALP 1+ Whakapapa Pinnacles Gullies
The complete traverse of the Pinnacle Ridge is one of the best alpine adventures in the North Island. Although nowhere extremely difficult, the traverse is a reasonably long, exposed and continuous undertaking.
ALP 2+ Ringatoto North Buttress
Trek across volcanic alpine landscape of dramatic contrasts – steaming vents, glacial valleys, ancient lava flows, alpine vegetation and vivid crater lakes, all with stunning views.
ALP 1 Full Moon Tongariro Alpine Crossing
Pleasantly exposed and varied mixed climbing, used to introduce North Island climbers to conditions other than steep snow and ice slopes.
ALP 1 & 2 Temple Basin Alpine Meet
A long weekend of ice and mixed climbing from Temple Basin Lodge in Arthurs Pass, with routes straight from the door and good company throughout.
